Thandai Powder Decoded
Ever wonder what’s really in that sweet milk drink? Stay till the end for the biggest calorie hack.
Glass calories
A full glass, 200 ml of full-cream milk with a heaped tablespoon of thandai powder and a spoon of sugar, lands at about 230 calories.
Sugar per glass
Roughly 22 grams of sugar end up in that glass, half of it you added yourself.
What one glass gives
The heaped tablespoon of powder is about 10 grams, giving roughly 50 calories and a gram of protein. The milk adds 130 calories, ten grams of natural sugar and a pinch of sodium. The sugar spoon contributes another 48 calories and 12 grams of added sugar, bringing the total to about 230 calories, 22 grams of sugar and 280 mg of sodium.
The powder itself is only about 50 calories; the milk and sugar make up the rest.
Ingredient roles
Almonds dominate the mix, giving body, richness and vitamin E. Fennel seeds bring that sweet, cooling anise flavor. Melon seeds add creaminess, while poppy seeds thicken the drink and contribute a tiny calcium boost.
Traditional view
In Unani and Ayurvedic tradition thandai is built on ‘cold’ ingredients like fennel, melon seeds and rose, with pepper added so the drink doesn’t feel heavy. A chilled glass feels refreshing, but it doesn’t actually lower body temperature.
What it can’t do
Thandai won’t stop heatstroke, won’t cool your core for long, and it won’t give extra strength beyond what the milk already provides. In real heat, water, oral rehydration solution or a salty lassi are far more effective.
The one simple swap
If you want the biggest calorie cut, halve the added sugar. One teaspoon instead of a tablespoon shaves off about 30 calories and eight grams of sugar, while the flavor stays pleasant.
