SGPT Explained
We'll walk through your liver test and reveal the key sign that means you need a doctor right away.
What an LFT shows
An LFT, or liver function test, is a bundle of blood tests printed on one sheet. It’s not a single liver score. The lab’s printed reference range is the rule of thumb, because ranges differ by machine, age and gender. The most common finding is a mildly raised SGPT while everything else looks normal.
Normal ALT range
Typical ALT values sit between seven and forty units per litre.
SGPT high means what
A mild SGPT increase, up to twice the upper limit, is usually nothing to panic about. When the level reaches about three times the limit, it signals a different conversation, and values in the hundreds demand a doctor the same day. The direction matters too, falling numbers are reassuring, rising numbers call for a repeat test soon.
Common causes of mild rise
Common reasons for a slight rise include a fatty liver from extra belly fat, diabetes or high triglycerides, a heavy workout within a day or two before the test, a recent viral fever like dengue or typhoid, and several medications such as painkillers, TB drugs, antibiotics, cholesterol-lowering pills or anti-seizure medicines. Even stopping a new supplement can help the numbers settle.
A single LFT is a photograph; a repeat a few weeks later is the film, showing whether the numbers are falling or climbing, and helping your doctor decide if anything has truly changed.
The one sign to act fast
