Backpack Weight Guide
Learn how to keep your kid's backpack light and pain-free, plus a game-changing tip at the end.
Weight limit
The safe rule is about ten percent of a child's body weight.
Check the weight
First, weigh your child alone, say 30 kg. Then weigh them with the packed bag, maybe 34 kg. Subtract to get the bag weight, then divide by body weight. If it’s over ten percent, it’s too heavy. In our example the bag is 13 % of body weight, clearly over the limit.
Water bottle weight
A full 1.5-litre bottle adds 1.5 kg, already the full limit for a 15 kg child.
Two-minute nightly repack
Tie the routine to brushing teeth. After you brush, empty the bag onto the bed, toss out old papers, then check tomorrow’s timetable. Pack only the needed books, putting the heaviest flat against the back. Use a small water bottle if possible. If you miss a night, just do it in the morning while breakfast cooks.
Wear it right
Always use both straps, never slung over one shoulder. Tighten them so the bag hugs the back, with the bottom sitting at the waist. Wide padded straps help comfort. A waist or chest strap adds extra support on longer walks.
Ask school for changes
If the bag stays heavy, bring numbers to the teacher: child weight and bag weight. Request lockers or shelves, thinner copies, and a timetable that spreads heavy subjects across days. Joining another parent makes the request harder to ignore.
The one habit
The single habit that makes the biggest difference is a two-minute nightly repack anchored to brushing teeth, with heavy books against the back.
