Rose Tea Made Safe
In this video we'll show you how to pick safe roses, brew tea from fresh or dried petals, and even make a homemade sharbat. Stay till the end for the one tip that keeps your brew pure.
Safe Rose Sources
Florist roses are sprayed with chemicals, so avoid them. Choose home-grown desi gulab that hasn't been sprayed for at least a month, petals sold for gulkand or arq from trusted sellers, or sealed food-grade dried petals.
Caffeine in Rose Tea
Pure rose tea contains no caffeine at all. If you add green or black tea, expect about 30 mg per cup, similar to a mild cup of tea.
Dried Petal Tea
Boil 250 ml water, let it cool to about 90-95 °C, then pour over a tablespoon of dried rose petals. Cover, steep for five minutes, strain, and enjoy the light floral flavor.
Fresh Petal Tea
Pick petals from two to three unsprayed roses, pinch off the pale base of each petal, rinse gently, then steep in hot water for five to seven minutes. You can add green tea, chai spices, or cardamom for extra flavor.
Rose Oil Fact
Did you know it takes several tonnes of rose petals to distil a single kilogram of rose oil? That's why true rose oil is one of the priciest ingredients in a perfumer's cabinet.
Sugar per Glass
A typical rose sharbat uses 30 ml of syrup in a 250 ml glass of water, which works out to about 18 g of sugar, roughly 70 calories per serving.
Homemade Sharbat
Combine two packed cups of fresh petals, or 20 g of dried petals, with 500 ml boiling water. Cover and let sit for thirty minutes, then strain and press the petals. Add 400 g sugar, heat gently until dissolved, and simmer a few minutes. Cool and serve over ice.
Verdict
Rose tea is a soothing, caffeine-free option for cramps or bedtime, but it won’t change skin colour. The sharbat is tasty but sugary, so treat it like any sweet drink. Use it in moderation and listen to your body.
