Cooling Head Oils
In this video we’ll explore three traditional Unani head oils, their ingredients, and a simple ritual to calm your mind before sleep, and we’ll reveal the single most useful tip at the end.
What’s Inside
Roghan Kahu mixes lettuce seeds with sesame oil, Roghan Kaddu blends bottle-gourd juice into sesame, and Roghan Khashkhash presses poppy seeds into the same base. All are meant to cool a hot, restless head at night.
Adult scalp dose
The recommended amount for an adult scalp is roughly five to ten milliliters, about a teaspoon or two. Using more just runs down the neck without extra benefit.
How to Apply
First, do a quick patch test on your forearm. Then warm the oil by placing the bottle in hot tap water for two minutes, never over a flame. Finally, massage gently for ten minutes, using fingertips in slow circles from hairline to skull base.
Warm briefly
Warm the oil just enough, about two minutes in a bowl of hot tap water, so it’s pliable but not hot enough to burn the scalp before you apply it.
Real vs Fake
Look for a golden sesame hue; the label must list sesame oil as the base, and the scent should be fresh and nutty. A bright green color or a stale, crayon smell means the oil is adulterated or oxidised.
The one key tip
The one key tip: always taste the gourd juice before you simmer it. If it’s bitter, skip it, bitter bottle gourd can be unsafe and will ruin the oil’s soothing effect.
