Rice Water Basics
In this quick guide we’ll walk through the exact rice-water recipe, timing, and how to use it on hair and face, plus the key tip you’ll want to remember.
Exact Ratio
The magic starts with one part rice to two parts water. Use about a half-cup of raw rice, roughly 100 g, and 200 ml of clean water for a balanced mix.
Fermentation Time
Let the strained water sit at room temperature for twelve to twenty-four hours. The slight sour scent shows the natural yeasts have done their work.
Plain vs Fermented
A plain batch is ready after thirty minutes and can be used immediately. If you let it ferment, wait the 12-24-hour window, then mix it with equal parts water before applying.
Hair Application
Start with clean, shampooed hair so the rice water can reach the shaft. Pour it over the scalp, massage gently, leave for five to ten minutes, then rinse. Use once a week, twice at most.
Face Use
For the face, stick to the plain version. Soak a cotton pad, swipe over a clean face, let it air-dry, then follow with your usual moisturizer. One nightly application is enough.
Who to Skip
If your hair is fine, straight, or low-porosity, the starch coating can build up, making it stiff and prone to breakage. Sensitive skin may sting from fermented water, so test first.
Shelf Life
Both plain and fermented rice water stay fresh for up to three days in the refrigerator. Discard any that smells off or develops discoloration.
The one
The single most important tip: always dilute fermented rice water with equal parts fresh water before it touches hair or skin. This prevents the starch from leaving a heavy film.
