Papaya Seeds Pepper?

Ever wonder if papaya seeds can replace pepper in your cooking? Stay tuned, because at the end I’ll share a simple kitchen trick that lets you use them as a spice without the bitterness.

Taste & Safe Amount

Papaya seeds taste sharp, a mix of black pepper, mustard and a hint of bitterness. A half-teaspoon crushed into a meal gives a peppery kick, but larger amounts can upset the stomach. Pregnant people should avoid them.

Drying Seeds for Spice

To turn seeds into a pepper substitute, first scoop them out of a ripe papaya, rinse off the jelly coat, then spread them in a single layer on a clean cloth. Sun-dry for three to five days, or bake at low heat, stirring until they rattle and snap.

Sun drying

In direct sunlight the seeds lose moisture and become hard, resembling tiny peppercorns. Expect the process to take about three to five days, depending on humidity. Store them in a sealed jar once dry.

Low oven

If you prefer an indoor method, set your oven to its lowest setting, about sixty to seventy degrees Celsius. Keep the seeds moving every hour for three to four hours, until they rattle and snap.

Papaya Seed Dressing

For a quick salad dressing, blend one teaspoon of fresh papaya seeds with three tablespoons of olive or mustard oil, a tablespoon of lemon juice, half a teaspoon of honey, and a pinch of salt. It stays fresh for two days in the fridge and adds a mustard-like heat to cucumber and onion salads.

Overall Verdict

So, are papaya seeds worth adding to your pantry? In small, pepper-sized amounts they work as a flavorful spice, but they’re not a miracle cure. Skip them if you’re pregnant, nursing, have a latex allergy, or are feeding young children.
