Homemade Electrolyte Showdown
Learn the simple drink that truly rehydrates you when you’re sick or overheated.
How electrolytes work
When you have loose stools, your gut loses water and sodium faster than plain water can replace. Drinking plain water alone can actually dilute the little salt left, making things worse. A tiny amount of glucose next to sodium tricks the intestine to pull both in, and water follows.
House ORS recipe
Here’s the proven mix: boil a litre of clean water, let it cool, then add six level teaspoons of sugar and half a level teaspoon of salt. Stir until it dissolves. It should taste faintly salty and sweet, like tears.
Why lemon water fails
A glass of lemon water has the juice of half a lemon, a couple of teaspoons of sugar and maybe a pinch of salt. That sugar amount equals a whole litre of ORS, while the salt is only a fraction of what you need.
Coconut water facts
Coconut water is often called nature’s ORS, but the numbers tell another story. A 250-millilitre glass supplies about six hundred milligrams of potassium, which is great, but only around sixty milligrams of sodium, far less than the thousand milligrams in a litre of ORS.
Coconut potassium
A fresh coconut gives roughly six hundred milligrams of potassium per cup.
When only ORS works
Four situations demand real ORS. Three or more watery stools a day, vomiting with diarrhea, heavy sweating with cramps, and any heat-related exhaustion. In each case, sip the measured solution after each episode, a cup for an adult, and keep eating.
The one remedy
The one drink that truly rehydrates you in illness is the homemade ORS: one litre of water, six teaspoons of sugar, and half a teaspoon of salt. Mix, stir, and sip.
