Forgetfulness or Dementia?
In this video we’ll show you how to tell normal aging memory slips from warning signs of dementia, and reveal the one simple habit that can catch trouble early.
Normal vs Dementia
Everyone slows down a bit with age, a name may slip, then pop back later. Dementia shows up as repeated questions, getting lost on familiar streets, and sudden errors with money or mood changes.
Early warning signs
Families often notice the first red flags: the same story told twice in a single visit, a loved one wandering back home after a long-standing route, or returning late from the mosque they’ve walked to for decades.
Key question
The question isn’t “does Ammi forget things?” but “can she still do what she could do last year?”
Diary period
Keep a simple notebook for two to four weeks. Write the date and a brief line of what happened, just the facts, no judgments. This short diary is far more useful than a long worried speech.
Treatable causes
Doctors first rule out reversible problems: a vitamin B12 deficiency, an under-active thyroid, depression that looks like poor memory, and hearing or eyesight loss that makes answers seem confused.
Talking kindly
Use calm, medical language, say we’ll check B12, thyroid and hearing instead of labeling dementia. Skip the dinner-table quizzes that shame. Correct only when the mistake matters, and keep elders involved in family choices for as long as possible.
The one habit to catch early
The single most useful habit is to jot down each memory slip as it happens, with date, what was forgotten, and any mood change. This quick diary lets doctors see patterns and act early.
