Night-Shift Ramadan Plan
Ever wonder how to stay alert on a night-shift during Ramadan? Stick around and I’ll reveal the one habit that makes all the difference.
Why mix is tough
Your clock expects you to sleep and be awake in daylight. A night shift flips that schedule, and fasting strips away the tea and snacks you normally rely on for alertness. The upside? Most of the fast happens while you’re supposed to be sleeping.
Sample timetable
Picture a 9 pm-7 am shift. Wake around three, get daylight, then break the fast at sunset with water, dates and a plate. Around midnight have a protein snack, and before morning prayers eat a light sehri. Finally, sleep six to seven hours in a quiet room.
What to eat
Water first, aim for a litre by sehri. Iftar: dates, water, then a plate of roti or rice, dal or meat and salad. Mid-shift: a light protein snack like an egg roll. Sehri: eggs, dal, whole-wheat roti or oats, yogurt and fruit. Skip fried foods.
Day sleep length
The key is a single, uninterrupted sleep block after Fajr. Target six to seven hours. The more consistent you keep it, the sharper you’ll feel during the night.
Driving danger
By seven in the morning you’ve been awake night and fasting since Fajr, so drowsiness peaks. Yawning, heavy lids, drifting lanes, these are warning signs. A short 15-20 minute nap in a safe spot helps, or share a ride. If unsafe, pull over and rest.
Quick nap benefit
A 15-20 minute power nap before you hit the road can restore alertness, improve reaction time and cut microsleep risk, giving you a safer drive home.
The one habit
The one habit that ties it all together is to make sehri your last meal right before you settle into a dark, quiet room for six to seven hours of sleep. Keep the bottle full, skip caffeine, and you’ll stay alert through the night.
