Mumps in Kids

Learn how to comfort a child with mumps and spot the warning signs.

What is mumps?

Mumps is a virus that inflames the parotid glands just in front of each ear, making the jaw line disappear. It often starts on one side. Dental abscesses or swollen neck nodes feel similar but have different clues. It’s usually mild, but watch for fever above 101°F.

Isolation period

Kids stay home for five days after the swelling begins to avoid spreading the virus.

Home care tips

You can't speed up the virus, but you can comfort your child. Use a clean cloth soaked in cool or warm water on the cheek, give weight-appropriate paracetamol or ibuprofen, and serve soft, non-sour foods. Hydration is key; offer water, herbal teas, or diluted juice.

Easy mumps menu

A gentle day plan could be soft daliya with milk for breakfast, khichdi with yoghurt for lunch, and a warm soup with soft bread for dinner, small, frequent portions.

Red flags: see doctor

Call a doctor right away if your child gets a severe headache with a stiff neck, vomiting, or drowsiness, signs of meningitis. Also watch for testicle pain, sudden hearing loss, or refusing fluids for more than six hours. Also be alert to severe tummy pain in girls or sudden vomiting.

Peak swelling

The swelling usually peaks within one to three days, then gradually eases over the next week.

The one tip

The single most helpful habit is to apply a cool or warm compress and keep the diet soft and bland, this eases pain and lets the swelling subside naturally. Do it several times a day for 10-15 minutes each session.
