Moving Solo: 4-Week Plan

In the next few minutes you'll get a simple four-week rhythm to settle into any city, and by the end I'll share the one habit that makes everything feel familiar.

Why weeks feel flat

When everything that used to run on autopilot now needs a decision, it can be tiring, and the people who know you aren't around yet, so feeling flat is completely normal.

Week 1: Basics

Start with two reliable meals, walk or ride your route once in daylight and note two landmarks, fix a bedtime and wake time, and schedule a regular call home for comfort.

Visit time

A quick fifteen-minute visit is enough to be recognized as a regular.

Be a regular

Choose a nearby cafe or park, go at the same hour twice a week, and order the same thing. By the third visit the staff will know your face, shrinking the city feel.

Week 3: One invitation

Invite yourself into one social moment, maybe a lunch with a colleague or a quick coffee with a neighbor. Keep it specific and easy to exit; it’s a low-stakes way to start connections.

Review time

Spend ten minutes each week reviewing what worked and what didn’t.

Week 4: Review

Sit down for ten minutes, note the meals, routes, and bedtime that feel right, the spot you enjoyed, and any brief conversations. Drop what drains you, keep what energizes you.

The one habit to feel at home

The single habit that makes a new city feel smaller is becoming a regular somewhere you can reach in fifteen minutes. Consistency turns strangers into familiar faces.
