Moringa Seeds: Eat & Clean Water
In this video you'll discover how to eat moringa seeds safely, how they can clear muddy water, and the one essential step you must take before drinking.
Finding & Eating Moringa Seeds
Open a green drumstick and see a row of seeds. Young ones are pale-green and sweet, great in sambar. Older seeds are dark brown with three papery wings; raw they taste bitter and may loosen your stomach. Roast the shelled kernels minutes for a crunchy snack.
Seeds per litre water
For very cloudy water, use two to three dry, mature moringa seeds per litre. That's the common rule of thumb; clearer water needs fewer seeds.
How the Water Trick Works
Crushed seed kernels release proteins that carry a positive charge. Mud, clay and many germs are negatively charged, so the proteins bind them into larger clumps that settle. The surface water looks clearer, but germs may still be present.
Making the Seed Paste
Grind the kernels into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle. Mix the powder with a cup of clean water to form a milky paste. Pour it into the cloudy water and stir quickly for a minute, then keep stirring slowly for five minutes.
Water clearing: Worth it
The seed trick can make muddy water look clearer, and it’s a useful first step in emergency or rural settings. But you still must boil or filter before drinking.
Eating Roasted Seeds
If you like a quick snack, roast a few kernels until golden. Two or three roasted seeds give you protein and healthy oil without the bitterness of raw ones. Stick to a small handful; raw seeds in larger amounts can cause cramps.
The one essential step
No matter how clear the water looks after adding moringa, the one thing you must do is boil it or run it through a proper filter before you drink.
