DIY Mehndi Basics
Learn the exact powder-to-liquid ratio, rest time, and a sealing trick that makes the stain last longer.
Skin paste ratio
Start with sifted henna, twenty grams, add one level teaspoon of sugar, then stir in about thirty milliliters of lemon juice or strong tea until the paste feels like thick yoghurt.
Dye release time
The dye releases over four to eight hours at room temperature.
Rest & cover
Place the bowl on the counter, press cling film on the surface so no air touches it, and let it sit for four to eight hours; after four hours the top should turn brown, indicating release.
Apply & seal
Wash the skin, dry it, then draw your design and let the paste dry for twenty to thirty minutes. Mix a teaspoon of sugar into a tablespoon of lemon juice and dab it on with cotton once the crust is set, repeat after fifteen minutes.
Hair paste
For hair, use one hundred grams of henna mixed with about three hundred milliliters of warm tea, skip the sugar, let it rest four to eight hours, then apply to clean dry hair, wrap, and leave for two to four hours before rinsing.
Store & lifespan
After the dye release, the paste stays strong for about a day at room temperature, two to three days in the fridge, and up to six months frozen; never refreeze a thawed cone and discard any that smells sour.
Avoid PPD & test
Never use cones that contain PPD, which gives an instant black stain but can cause burns and lasting sensitivity. Always patch test a pea-size spot for two hours and watch for reactions, and avoid henna on babies or anyone with G6PD deficiency.
The one sealing trick
The secret to a deep, lasting colour is a simple sugar-lemon seal: dab a thin layer of sugar dissolved in lemon juice onto the dry paste, wait fifteen minutes, then repeat. This locks the crust and lets the dye develop fully.
