Mehndi & Dry Hair
Here's the short, honest answer, and one tip most people miss.
Why mehndi dries hair
The paste’s tannins cling to each strand, and acids like lemon or amla strip natural oils. Long sit-ins make the hair feel rough. These components coat the shaft, making it feel stiff.
Mix for softer hair
For a softer result, use pure body-art henna, add warm water or a weak tea, and skip the lemon. Stir in plain yogurt for extra moisture. The yogurt adds moisture and balances pH, helping the colour settle gently.
Pre-oil before colour
Oil the lengths and ends the night before, keeping the scalp bare. In the morning, if it feels greasy, give it a mild shampoo before colouring. This pre-oil step protects the ends while still letting the colour penetrate the roots.
Rest time needed
Let the paste rest four to eight hours at room temperature; the colour releases fully without extra acid. A longer rest also reduces the need for harsh acids.
Rinse like a pro
When rinsing, use lukewarm water only, then pour a generous amount of conditioner, work it through, rinse again, and leave a pea-size amount in the ends. Avoid shampoo at this stage; it can strip the remaining pigment.
Rescue straw-like hair
If your hair still feels straw-like, warm two tablespoons of coconut oil, massage it in, cover with a shower cap for thirty to sixty minutes, then shampoo once and condition. Repeat the oil treatment after a few days for lasting softness.
The one trick to avoid dryness
The one trick to avoid dryness is to condition right after rinsing and leave a pea-size dab of conditioner in the ends. A tiny amount is enough; too much can weigh hair down.
