Mehndi, Amla & Coffee Mix

Learn the simple 5-to-1 henna-amla blend, and the surprise about coffee at the end, and see why coffee often disappoints.

100 g mehndi

A batch starts with a hundred grams of mehndi, enough for shoulder-length hair, and this amount covers about shoulder-length, medium-thick hair.

Rest time

Let the paste sit four to six hours at room temperature before rinsing. Room temperature is key; hot liquid can weaken the dye.

Ingredients & ratios

Mix 100 g mehndi with 20 g amla, then stir in warm coffee until the paste looks like thick yoghurt. Use a steel or glass bowl, never iron, to keep the colour true.

Shade impact

Amla tones the orange, giving a softer, slightly browner red, while coffee adds only a faint brown cast. The effect is subtle; coffee won’t turn red into brown.

Mix, rest & apply

Brew a strong cup, cool it to warm, blend powders in a non-iron bowl, stir to yoghurt texture, cover and rest four to six hours. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap to keep moisture in.

Adjust & care

Add more amla for a lighter auburn, skip it for brighter red but firmer feel; deep-condition after two days and oil lengths before next wash. If you have dry or heat-styled hair, the straw feel is normal and eases after a couple washes.

Safety first

Never use black mehndi that turns skin black quickly, it likely contains PPD, which can cause burns and allergies; always do a patch test behind the ear. A quick strand test will show the exact shade before you commit to the whole head.

The one ratio to remember

The key tip: keep a five-to-one henna-to-amla ratio; coffee is optional and adds only a faint brown tint. Stick to this ratio each time for consistent colour, and you’ll see coffee’s subtle hue only when you want it.
