Five Kilo Challenge
Want to shed five kilos without ditching your roti? Give yourself ten to twelve weeks and let your kitchen keep up.
At a Glance
Aim for about five kilos in ten to twelve weeks, which works out to roughly four to five hundred calories less each day. The first couple weeks you’ll see a bigger drop from water, then the pace steadies as real fat melts.
Why 10-12 Weeks
A kilo of fat holds around 7,700 calories, but your body isn’t a calculator. A daily deficit of about five hundred calories adds up to roughly half a kilo of fat each week. Over ten to twelve weeks, with a few slower days, a missed weekend or a wedding, five kilos feels doable.
Plan That Survives Shaadi
The plan that survives a shaadi season is the plan that works.
Water Weight Explained
Your muscles and liver keep carbs as glycogen, and glycogen holds water. When you cut back on roti, rice or sugar, the body uses those stores and lets go of the water too. Less salt and fewer fried snacks do the same, so the first week may show one or two kilos gone, mostly water, not fat.
Week-by-Week Plan
Weeks one and two are about setting up the kitchen and getting habits right. Use a measured menu, keep oil to a teaspoon per person plus a little for the pot, and limit roti to two medium chapatis per meal for most men, one or two for women. Cut chai sugar to a level teaspoon per cup, two cups a day. Swap sodas for water, lemon water or chaas. From week three add a ten-to-fifteen minute walk after lunch and dinner, at a pace where you can talk. Use stairs when you can. If hunger strikes, reach for a planned snack like roasted chana, a fruit, a cup of roasted makhana or a small bowl of dal.
Warm Jeera Water
Many families finish dinner with a warm glass of jeera or saunf water instead of sweets. It doesn’t melt belly fat, but it’s a zero-sugar alternative that can replace a dessert or sugary drink.
Medical Safety First
If you’re on insulin or blood-sugar tablets, check with your doctor before cutting portions. Blood-pressure meds may need adjustment as you lose weight. Conditions like kidney disease, thyroid issues, pregnancy, breastfeeding, eating-disorder history, or being under eighteen all require professional guidance. Never drop below about 1,200 calories for women or 1,500 for men without supervision.
Simple Tracking
A simple notebook does the trick. Once a week write your weight, same morning after the bathroom, note your waist in centimeters, and add a short line about the week, maybe a wedding, a period, or a daily walk. After three months you’ll see the pattern better than any app.
