LASIK Overview

We’ll walk through what LASIK does, who can get it, the main risks, and the single most important thing to know before deciding.

How LASIK Works

Think of your cornea as a clear window. LASIK lifts a thin flap, the laser reshapes the tissue underneath, then the flap settles back, no stitches, and vision often clears within a day, and most patients report clear vision within hours.

Eligibility Basics

Eligibility is straightforward: you need to be over eighteen, have a stable prescription for at least a year, and a healthy cornea that's thick and regular enough to be reshaped safely.

Minimum Age

The minimum age for LASIK is eighteen, and many surgeons prefer patients in their early twenties.

Pre-Surgery Checks

Before surgery you’ll stop wearing contacts, undergo a full eye exam with dilated drops, get corneal topography and thickness scans, and have a dry-eye test to flag any existing dryness. Your doctor will also discuss post-op drops and activity restrictions.

Risks & Side Effects

The most common side effect is dry eye, which can feel gritty for weeks or months. Nighttime glare, halos or starbursts may appear, and a small chance of under- or over-correction or flap complications exists.

Myth: Never Glasses Again

LASIK doesn’t stop the natural aging of the eye’s lens, so most people still need reading glasses after forty. It also won’t prevent cataracts or glaucoma, and you must tell future doctors about the procedure.

Reading Glasses Age

Most people will need reading glasses after age forty, even if they had LASIK.

The one thing to remember

Even with perfect results, your eyes will still age, so expect to need reading glasses in your 40s and keep regular eye check-ups.
