We compare three common knee injections, steroid, hyaluronic acid, and PRP, covering how they work, how long relief lasts, costs, and risks. You’ll learn which one might help a flare and why many people skip the others.

We also share the essential strengthening routine that makes any injection worthwhile and give after-care tips. This isn’t medical advice; see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

Knee Injections Overview

We’ll break down three knee shots and reveal the one habit that truly helps.

Steroid injection

Steroid injections are a strong anti-inflammatory placed inside the joint, often with a local anesthetic. They calm swelling fast and give relief for a few weeks to two months, but they don’t rebuild cartilage. Guidelines accept them for painful flares when pills aren’t enough, yet doctors limit them to a few per year.

Gel injection

Hyaluronic acid, a natural joint fluid component, is injected as a thick gel to lubricate the knee. Usually a series of three to five shots a week apart. Some feel modest improvement after a few weeks, lasting months, but average benefit over placebo is small. It’s pricey and guidelines are split.

PRP shot

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, comes from your own blood spun to concentrate platelets, then injected. The idea is growth factors may aid repair, but there’s no standard preparation, different machines give different products. Studies show mixed results, often modest. It’s drug-free, costly, and most guidelines say evidence isn’t strong enough.

Skip other shots

Stem-cell, ozone, homeopathic and unnamed injections are best avoided. Stem-cell knee shots are experimental, unregulated, and have caused infections. Ozone lacks solid evidence. If a clinic can’t name the vial, you may get a hidden steroid, risky for diabetes or surgery.

Exercise window length

After an injection you have about twelve weeks to focus on strengthening before the pain returns.

The one habit to keep

Use that window for daily sit-to-stands, straight-leg raises and wall sits, plus any weight loss, each kilo off reduces knee load. Consistency over twelve weeks gives the best chance to delay surgery.

After injection care

Rest the knee a day or two, ice if it swells, keep the puncture site clean for 24 hours, and avoid oil massages for a few days. A sore knee for a day is normal; fever, heat, redness or worsening pain after 48 hours needs prompt attention.
