Kids Hair Care Basics
Learn easy steps to keep your child's hair clean, soft and safe, and stay for the one habit that makes a big difference.
How often to wash
Most school-age kids do fine with a mild shampoo once or twice a week, unless they’ve been sweating or getting dirty after play, then a quick wash helps.
Oil: light and brief
If you oil, use just a thin layer worked through with your fingers, leave it an hour or two, then wash it out. Heavy oil overnight can make the scalp itchy.
Gentle detangling steps
Mist the hair lightly so it’s damp, apply a bit of conditioner or oil, hold the knot from the scalp and start combing from the ends, moving up inch by inch.
Try this: ends first
Give your child a favorite toy or let them choose the comb, then begin at the very tips and work upward. This simple change keeps most tears at bay.
Loose styles matter
Tight braids or high ponytails pull on the same roots and can cause traction hair loss. Loosen styles, switch the part regularly and give the scalp a break on weekends.
Boys: short cuts
Short cuts stay clean with a quick shampoo every week or two. Shaving a child’s head won’t make hair grow back thicker; just be sure the razor is clean and watch for cuts.
Personal combs & caps
Head lice spread mainly through shared combs, caps and hair ties. Give every kid their own set and rinse them often to keep the scalp healthy.
The one habit
The single habit that makes the biggest difference is always starting the comb at the ends and moving upward on slightly damp hair. It reduces breakage and keeps the experience calm.
