Aftercare Basics

Learn how to care for your newborn after circumcision, and stay for the one tip that keeps the wound clean. We'll cover daily steps, signs to watch, and simple supplies you need.

Healing time

Most babies finish healing in about seven to ten days with simple care. That's why keeping the diaper clean and using a thin layer of jelly works so well.

What’s normal

The tip looks raw and red at first, then a soft yellow film appears, this is normal, not pus. Swelling usually peaks around day two or three and then eases. A baby may be fussy, especially while peeing, but it's typical.

Days 0-3

In the first three days keep the dressing on if there is one, check the diaper hourly, and apply petroleum jelly at every change. Use a loose diaper and only a plain-water sponge bath to avoid irritation.

Days 4-7

From day four to seven continue the jelly, and you can usually give a normal short bath, ask your doctor if unsure. Swelling should settle, the Plastibell ring will start to loosen, and the baby feels more comfortable.

Days 8-10

By day eight to ten keep the jelly until the tip looks pink and dry. The ring should have fallen off, and the skin will be fully healed, ready for regular diaper changes without extra protection.

The one tip to keep wound clean

The single most helpful habit is keeping the diaper loose and applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly at every change, this prevents sticking, reduces irritation, and speeds healing, giving both baby and parents peace of mind.
