Khatmi Hair Wash

I'll show you how to turn marshmallow root into a silky hair rinse and the trick that makes it work. Stay tuned for a simple step that can change your routine.

What is khatmi

Marshmallow, known as khatmi, is a tall plant from salty marshes. Its root, flowers and seeds are packed with mucilage, a soft gel that turns water slick and soothing.

Root amount

Use two tablespoons of dried root or flowers for a half-liter batch. That’s enough to get the slippery gel without waste. Stir it in warm water and let it sit overnight for best results.

Make the rinse

Heat half a litre of water to about sixty to seventy degrees, don’t boil, because too hot water breaks down the mucilage. Add the root, cover, and let it steep overnight. Cool before you pour on hair.

Detangling tip

When your hair is still damp, pour a cup of the khatmi liquid over it. Use a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends and moving upward. The slip lets you glide through knots with barely any tug.

Hair wash verdict

The khatmi rinse truly smooths the outer cuticle, making combing easier and reducing breakage. It’s a gentle, natural conditioner that works well for dry or frizzy hair.

Medicine gap

Wait at least two hours after drinking or applying the rinse before taking any tablets or syrups. This helps the mucilage not trap your medication.

Cough caution

Khatmi is also used in cough blends, but it’s not a cure. If a cough lasts more than three weeks, brings up blood, or comes with fever, see a doctor.

The one tip

The one tip that makes the biggest difference is to use the khatmi liquid as a post-shampoo conditioner. After washing, pour it on, comb through, and let it sit for a minute before rinsing.
