Katam & Henna Beard Dye

We'll show you how to get a natural dark brown beard and warn you about the biggest fake, so you can dye safely at home.

What is Katam?

Katam is a dried leaf powder, most often from the shrub Buxus dioica that grows in Yemen and the Arabian Peninsula. It’s traditionally mixed with henna to deepen the colour.

Prophetic Tradition

Hadiths tell us that Abu Bakr used henna and katam on his grey hair, and later scholars of Tibb-e-Nabvi kept the practice alive. Many Muslim families still follow it for the beard.

Myths vs Truth

People claim katam makes a beard jet black, grows thicker hair, or is always the genuine Yemeni plant. In reality it only deepens henna to a dark brown, and it doesn’t affect growth.

Spot Real Katam

Real katam looks olive-khaki green as a dry powder. When you add water it stays green-brown and forms a coppery film. On white hair it leaves a faint brown tint, not blue.

Mixing Steps

Start with about twenty grams of pure henna, mix with forty to sixty millilitres of warm water and let it rest four to eight hours. Just before applying, stir in ten to twenty grams of katam and a splash of water.

Storage & Safety

Store katam and henna in airtight jars, away from light, cool and dry. Use them within a year and never ingest. Always patch-test on a small skin area 48 hours before full use.

Patch test wait

Give the colour at least forty-eight hours to show any reaction before you commit to a full beard application, and if you notice itching, stop immediately.

The one mistake to avoid

The biggest pitfall is buying unlabeled powder that’s really indigo or contains PPD, a harsh chemical. Always buy from a trusted source that lists the plant name and origin.
