Jasmine Oil: Fact vs Folklore

We’ll show you how to spot genuine jasmine oil and why most bottles are just scented mineral oil, plus a quick test you can do at home before you buy.

Read the label, not the picture

Read the ingredients on the back of the bottle, not the pretty flower picture on the front. The first ingredient tells you the base: mineral oil, a plant oil like sesame or coconut, or just a fragrance blend.

Hair claims are mostly hype

People claim jasmine oil grows hair, adds shine, fights frizz, dandruff, even straightens curls overnight. In reality the oil only smooths the cuticle and can weigh hair down a little, making waves appear flatter, but it doesn’t change your hair’s structure.

Daily caffeine limit

The safe daily caffeine limit for most adults is 400 milligrams, roughly the amount in four cups of coffee. Pregnant women should stay under 200 milligrams, which is about two cups of strong tea.

Make proper jasmine tea

Jasmine tea is essentially green or white tea that has been scented with fresh motia blossoms, often overnight. To brew, heat water to about 80 °C, not a rolling boil, use one teaspoon (about two grams) per 200 ml, steep two to three minutes, then enjoy plain; milk dulls the fragrance.

Keep gajra fresh

To keep a gajra fresh, pick white, closed buds in the late afternoon when they’re still unopened. Wrap the garland in a damp muslin cloth, place it in a sealed container in the refrigerator, not the freezer, and use it within one to two days before it browns.

The one tip to spot real jasmine oil

The one tip to spot real jasmine oil is to always read the ingredient list first. If the first entry is paraffinum liquidum or light paraffin, the product is mainly mineral oil. If a plant oil such as sesame appears first, it’s a scented carrier. If only ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’ is listed, it’s just scent without any jasmine extract.
