Low Sugar During Ramadan

Stay tuned to learn the exact rule that saves you from a dangerous low during Ramadan.

How a hypo feels

When your brain’s fuel drops, you get a rush of adrenaline. Early signs are cold, clammy sweat, shaky hands, a racing heartbeat, and sudden hunger. If it deepens, vision blurs, thoughts fog, and you may feel clumsy. Severe cases can lead to fainting or seizures, which need emergency help.

Brain confusion

A confused brain is bad at deciding to stop. Decide the rule before the fast, not during the hypo.

Why lows rise

Ramadan can stretch the gap between meals to 13-16 hours. Your liver usually covers that, but insulin or sulfonylurea tablets keep pulling sugar down. Skipping sehri, heavy housework in the heat, or a long nap can all tip the balance toward a low.

Pack a hypo pouch

Before sunset, slip a small zip-bag into your bag. Include a fast-acting sugar packet, a tiny juice tetra-pack, your glucose meter and strips, and a note that says, I have diabetes, give me sugar if I’m confused.

First 15 minutes

When you notice symptoms, pause whatever you’re doing and sit down. Sip about 150 ml of regular juice or a non-diet soda, that’s roughly 15 grams of fast sugar. Wait fifteen minutes, then check your reading again. If it’s still low, repeat once or twice.

Low threshold

If your meter reads under 70 milligrams per deciliter, it’s time to break the fast immediately.

Fast sugar amount

Fifteen grams of quick-acting carbohydrate is enough to raise most lows without overshooting.

The one rule to follow

Bottom line: if your glucose is below 70 or above 300 milligrams per deciliter, or you have clear hypo symptoms, stop fasting right away, consume 15 grams of fast sugar, wait fifteen minutes and test again. That simple rule keeps you safe and lets you continue your fast later.
