Bleach Dilution Basics

We'll show you the exact ratios for every cleaning job, and the one tip that saves you time.

Check your bottle

Always read the label first. Look for the percentage of available chlorine. If the bottle lacks a clear label, batch date or maker, discard it, especially around children.

Two mixes cover all

Two mixes do all the work. The weak mix is about 0.1 percent chlorine, 20 milliliters of a five percent bottle per litre of cold water. The strong mix is about 0.5 percent, 100 milliliters per litre. Always add water before bleach to avoid splashes.

Job based ratios

For everyday surfaces like kitchen counters or bathroom floors, use 20 milliliters per litre and leave it wet for at least one minute. For sick rooms, toilets during diarrhoea, or vomit and stool clean-up, use 100 milliliters per litre and keep it wet for ten minutes.

Clean vomit safely

First, put on rubber gloves and open a window. Keep kids and pets out until the floor dries. Cover the mess with paper, lift it into a bag, then wash the area with soap and water. Finally, spray the strong bleach mix over the whole spot and a half-metre around, letting it stay wet for ten minutes.

Never mix bleach

Never combine bleach with acid cleaners, vinegar, lemon juice, or ammonia. Those mixtures create toxic chlorine gas that can hurt your lungs and eyes. Use either bleach or the other product, never both at the same time.

The one ratio to remember

The one ratio to remember is twenty milliliters of standard five percent bleach per litre of cold water for everyday cleaning. It’s cheap, safe, and works when the surface stays wet for at least a minute.
