Fast Safely

Stay tuned for the key rule that can keep you safe during Ramadan fasting.

Break Fast If Pain

If you feel chest pain, pressure, or sudden breathlessness during the fast, stop immediately and seek help, don’t wait for sunset. This rule applies to everyone, no matter your condition.

Who Can Fast?

Many with stable heart disease, controlled chest pain, and no recent hospital visits can fast without trouble. However, after a recent heart attack, stent, unstable angina, or unstable heart failure, doctors usually advise against fasting.

Blood Thinners Timing

Blood thinners must be taken exactly as prescribed. Missing a dose during Ramadan can raise clot risk, and some, like warfarin, react to big dietary changes. Ask your doctor which timing works best for suhoor and iftar.

High BP Emergency

A blood pressure reading of 180 over 120 with symptoms is an emergency. Keep home readings below 135/85 and clinic below 140/90. If you hit those numbers, break your fast and seek care.

Iftar Eating Tips

Start with water and one or two dates, then pray before the main meal. Keep fried foods to a couple of pieces, fill half the plate with vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter carbs, and skip extra salt or chaat masala.

Ask Your Cardiologist

Before Ramadan, ask your cardiologist if fasting is safe for you, which medicines must stay with suhoor or iftar, whether you need an ECG, INR or kidney test, and what your fluid and salt limits are.

The one rule

The single most important rule is simple: if you experience chest pain, pressure, severe breathlessness, or a blood pressure of 180 over 120 with symptoms, stop fasting immediately and get medical help.
