Heart Checkup Essentials

I'll reveal a tiny daily habit that can lower your heart risk fast.

Why check early

South Asian men often store fat around the belly and liver, even if they look slim. That hidden fat, plus lower HDL and higher triglycerides, makes arteries narrow earlier, so checkups matter.

High BP threshold

A clinic reading of 140 over 90 or higher on more than one visit signals high blood pressure. At home, aim for 135 over 85 or lower.

Diabetes diagnosis level

If your fasting sugar hits 126 milligrams per deciliter, or your HbA1c is 6.5 percent or above, doctors diagnose diabetes. Slightly lower numbers mean pre-diabetes, a chance to act.

Home tests to track

Use an upper-arm automatic cuff, not a wrist one, and sit quietly for five minutes before measuring. Take two readings a minute apart, morning and evening, for a week. For waist, measure at the narrowest point between rib and hip.

Warning signs to watch

Chest pressure or heaviness that appears with climbing stairs or fast walking, and eases with rest, can be a red flag. Pain that spreads to the left arm, jaw, neck, back, or upper stomach, plus breathlessness, cold sweat, nausea or dizziness, should never be ignored.

Gas doesn't usually get worse when you climb the stairs.

10-minute start

Start a simple habit: after dinner, walk briskly for ten minutes. Next week, stretch it to fifteen minutes. On the first of each month, measure your waist and note any change.

Quit smoking, naswar

Quitting cigarettes, shisha, and naswar cuts heart risk dramatically, often within a year. Pair that with about 150 minutes of brisk walking weekly, lower salt intake, more vegetables, whole grains, and aim for seven hours of sleep.
