Home Hearing Test
Today we'll walk through quick home hearing checks, whisper, finger rub, and the one emergency sign you must know. Stay till the end for the crucial tip.
Whisper Test
Pick a quiet room, turn off fans, and have the person sit. You stand about an arm's length, roughly 60 cm, behind them, out of sight. Press the tragus of the ear you’re testing, then exhale fully and whisper three mixed items, like ‘4, B, 7’. If they repeat all three, that ear passes the basic screen.
Finger Rub Test
In the same quiet space, hold your thumb and index finger about 5 to 8 cm from the ear and rub them together. Start soft, then increase pressure. Do this for each ear. If the firm rub is heard but the soft one isn’t on one side, that ear deserves a professional check.
Wax or Loss?
Wax buildup is the most common reason a home test fails and is usually easy to fix. It often feels like a full, blocked ear and muffles high-frequency sounds first. If the problem shows up suddenly, lasts months, or affects both ears equally, it’s more likely true hearing loss and you should see a clinician.
The one emergency sign
If hearing drops suddenly in one ear, over minutes to a couple of days, without a cold or blockage, that's a red flag. It may come with ringing or fullness, and the best outcome depends on seeing an ENT within the first 72 hours, ideally the same day.
Try This Tonight
Pick the oldest person at home, do the whisper test together, then swap roles. Write both scores on the inside of a cupboard door with the date. Repeat the same check in six months; any change is valuable information for a future audiology visit.
