Headache & BP: Facts
In this video we’ll sort out when a headache and high blood pressure are an emergency and reveal the single key sign to watch for at the end.
High BP rarely causes headaches
Most people think a headache means their blood pressure is spiking, but that’s a myth. In reality, pain and anxiety push the numbers up, not the other way around. Only a truly dangerous reading paired with serious symptoms should set off alarm bells.
Emergency threshold
If your cuff hits one-eighty over one-twenty and you feel chest pain, breathlessness, confusion, vision loss, weakness, a seizure, or a stubborn nosebleed, call emergency services right away.
When a headache is urgent
These are the red-flag symptoms that turn a high reading into a crisis: chest tightness, shortness of breath, sudden confusion or drowsiness, blurry or lost vision, one-sided weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, seizures, or a nosebleed that won’t stop after twenty minutes.
High BP cut-off
A clinic reading of one-forty over nine-zero generally signals hypertension, but by itself it isn’t an emergency unless other danger signs appear. Most people with this level feel fine and can manage it with regular check-ups and lifestyle tweaks.
Getting a reliable reading
When a headache hits, wait five minutes in a quiet seat, empty your bladder, and skip caffeine or smoking. Sit upright, back supported, feet flat, cuff at heart level. Take three readings a minute apart, ignore the first, and average the last two.
The one sign
The one sign that makes a headache a medical emergency is a blood pressure of one-eighty over one-twenty together with any of the warning symptoms we just listed.
