Pregnancy Headaches
Headaches are common while expecting, but a few clues tell you when it’s just hormones and when it needs urgent care.
Doctor today, not tomorrow
If after 20 weeks you get a throbbing pain across the front that won’t ease with rest, water, or food, and you notice blurred vision or flashing lights, it could be pre-eclampsia. That calls for a doctor or hospital visit right away.
Watch after this week
The risk of pre-eclampsia starts to appear after the twentieth week of pregnancy, so stay extra vigilant from then on.
Comfort measures safe
When a regular pregnancy headache pops up, try a full glass of water right away, then keep sipping to reach about two to two-and-a-half litres a day. Within fifteen minutes, have a small snack like a banana or toast with peanut butter. Rest in a dark, quiet room on your left side for twenty to thirty minutes, and use a cool damp cloth on your forehead if you like.
High BP alert
A blood-pressure reading of 140 over 90 millimetres of mercury or higher is a red flag that warrants immediate medical attention.
Normal vs pre-eclampsia
A typical pregnancy headache eases within an hour or two after water, food, and rest, and comes and goes. A pre-eclampsia headache stays heavy despite those measures and is usually paired with swelling, vision changes, upper-stomach pain, or a high blood-pressure reading.
Traditional view
Desi homes often use a warm oil head massage, a cool cloth, and sabz chai for relief, which are gentle and fine. Tight cloth wraps and strong menthol balms, however, don’t help and can delay a needed blood-pressure check.
The one simple habit
The most effective immediate step is to keep yourself well-hydrated and rest on your left side. If you notice any swelling, vision changes, or a high blood-pressure reading, check your BP and call your doctor right away.
