Hair Transplant Overview
In this video we break down how hair transplants work, who they suit, and the key question you must ask before booking.
How a transplant works
Think of your scalp as a garden. The back is a thick lawn, the top has bare patches. A transplant digs up small tufts from the lawn and replants them on top. It doesn't grow new hair; it just moves what you already have. The two main methods are FUE, where single groups of one to four hairs are extracted, and FUT, where a thin strip is taken and divided.
Ideal candidates
The best candidates are people whose hair loss has settled into a clear, predictable pattern and slowed down. For men that often means the late twenties or older with a receding hairline or thinning crown that hasn't changed much in a year or two. Women may benefit if the donor area at the back remains dense, but many women thin all over, making them poorer candidates.
What to expect
Your original hair was packed tightly, so a transplant can’t match that density. Surgeons aim for a natural look at normal talking distance, not a strip-bare back. Thickness, colour contrast and curl affect how full the result looks. Remember, the hair around the grafts continues to thin unless you manage the underlying loss, often with medication.
Crusts fall off
After the procedure, tiny crusts form over the graft sites. They usually fall off on their own within about two weeks, so avoid picking or scratching them during that time.
FUE graft size
In FUE, each graft contains between one and four hairs. This small group is why the technique leaves only tiny dot scars and why careful planning of graft numbers matters.
The one question to ask
Before you sign any contract, ask the clinic who will be doing the actual graft placement. Some places have a doctor only pop in while technicians do most of the work. Knowing the surgeon’s name, qualifications and whether they are registered gives you a clear picture of the expertise you’ll receive.
