Man Boobs: Spot Fat vs Gland

In this video we’ll walk through how to tell if your chest bulge is just extra fat or real gland tissue, using a simple pinch test you can do in two minutes, and we’ll explain what steps to take next.

Fat or Gland?

A man’s chest can enlarge for two reasons. Fat builds up just like belly fat and feels soft and spread out. Gland tissue grows when hormones shift, creating a firm, rubbery disc right under the nipple. Only the fat usually shrinks with diet.

Home Pinch Test

Lie on your back, hand behind head. With the other hand place thumb and forefinger a few centimeters apart on each side of the nipple. Bring them together; soft tissue feels like belly fat, firm disc feels like a coin. That shows fat or gland.

Typical resolution time

Most teenage chest tissue fades on its own within about two years, so you can often wait and watch before seeking treatment, unless it’s painful or worsening.

What to Do Next

Soft tissue on both sides and overweight? Focus on gradual fat loss and strength work. A tender, rubbery disc in a teen usually settles within two years, just monitor. A new firm disc in an adult means see a doctor and get blood tests.

Teen Chest Changes

During puberty more than half of boys notice some breast budding, often one side first and a bit sore. It’s normal and usually fades within six months to two years without treatment. Parents should take it seriously and have a doctor check overall puberty progress.

Drugs & Steroids

A variety of prescription drugs, from blood pressure pills to antidepressants, can trigger chest swelling. The biggest avoidable cause in young men is anabolic steroids, often hidden in weight-gainer powders. If you suspect a medication, talk to your doctor before stopping it.

The one trick to know

The single most useful habit is the two-minute pinch test. It quickly tells you whether your chest bulge is just fat, which you can shrink with diet and exercise, or gland tissue that needs a doctor’s eye.
