Grow Arjun at Home

I'll show you how to start an arjun tree from seed and the one space trick you can't miss.

Potting the seedling

First, give your seedling a deep container, about fifteen inches gives enough room for the shallow roots to spread. Fill it with a loose mix of equal parts soil, sand and well-rotted compost, then water deeply whenever the top couple of inches feel dry. This keeps the young tree happy until it’s ready for the ground.

Tree height potential

In the wild this riverbank tree can tower up to thirty metres, so give it space early on. Knowing its ultimate size helps you plan the planting spot and avoid future headaches.

Seed vs sapling

You have three options. Fresh seeds are free and work well if you soak them first. A nursery-grown sapling skips the fragile seed stage and is ready to pot right away. Cuttings need hormone treatments and are still experimental, so most home growers skip them.

Planting out timing

When the monsoon arrives, move the pot into the ground. In coastal humid zones like Karachi, aim for March to June planting and July to September out. Hot-dry areas such as Multan need a shorter window, March to April, with monsoon rains in July and August. The plains of Punjab and Delhi work well from March to May.

Pick the spot

Arjun trees spread a wide, shallow root system, so choose a spot at least six metres away from walls, septic tanks and water lines. Give it full sun, heavy shade makes it bushy and weak. A clear, open area lets the crown expand without crowding neighbours.

First fruit years

Patience pays off: the tree starts bearing fruit only after six to seven years in the ground. Knowing this timeline helps set realistic expectations and keeps you from giving up too early.

Pests & common issues

If you see white powder on the leaves, improve air flow and give the plant more sun, removing the worst leaves. A soggy pot can cause root rot, switch to a sandier mix and water less often. Yellowing in late winter is usually just a seasonal change, not a problem.

The one space rule

Here’s the single most important tip: always give your arjun at least six metres of clearance from any structure and ensure it gets full, unobstructed sunlight. This simple rule prevents root crowding, keeps the tree healthy, and saves you from costly pruning later.
