GeneXpert TB Report

Stay tuned, the simple sputum sample tip comes at the end.

What the test checks

The GeneXpert test looks for the DNA of the TB germ and also checks if the bacteria carry the rifampicin resistance marker. It’s done on sputum, sometimes other fluids, and the service is free at government TB centres.

Result time

Results appear in about two hours, often the same day you give the sample. That quick turnaround lets doctors decide the next steps without long waiting.

Reading the report

A GeneXpert report has just two key lines. ‘MTB Detected’ tells you the amount of TB DNA, from very low to high. ‘Rif Resistance Not Detected’ means the standard drug should work.

When to seek urgent care

If you notice coughing up blood, breathlessness at rest, chest pain, high fever with confusion, or a child who’s floppy and not feeding, treat it as an emergency. Call 1122 in Pakistan or 112 in India, or go straight to a hospital.

Negative result but cough persists

A negative GeneXpert result lowers the chance of lung TB, but it doesn’t rule it out completely. The sample might have been saliva instead of deep sputum, or the bacteria could be elsewhere in the body.

Good sputum sample

To give a good sputum sample, collect it first thing in the morning before eating or brushing. Rinse your mouth with plain water, stand near an open window, take two or three deep breaths, then cough hard from deep in the chest.

The one key takeaway

The one key takeaway: collect your sputum correctly, early morning, deep cough, clean mouth, and open air, to ensure the GeneXpert test gives a reliable result. That simple habit can make a big difference.
