Frozen Shoulder Overview
We'll walk through the stages and the simple exercise that won't hurt you.
What is Frozen Shoulder?
A frozen shoulder, also called kandha jaam, is when the joint capsule thickens and tightens, making the arm hard to lift or turn. It progresses through three stages over months to years.
Stage 1 lasts
Stage one, called freezing, typically lasts between two and nine months. Pain dominates, the outer upper arm aches, and you notice a gradual loss of motion each week.
How to Spot It
Ask a friend to gently lift your relaxed arm out to the side and turn it outward, as if waving. A rotator cuff problem will still move a lot, but a frozen shoulder stops short, hitting a wall well before full range.
Stage 2: Frozen
Stage two, the frozen phase, lasts four to twelve months. Pain eases, but stiffness peaks, making everyday tasks like combing hair or reaching a seat belt feel impossible without gentle movement.
Diabetics risk
People with diabetes develop frozen shoulder two to four times more often, and it tends to linger longer. High blood sugar stiffens collagen, making the capsule stickier and harder to loosen.
Key Exercise: Pendulum
The pendulum swing is safe for every stage, especially early freezing. Stand beside a table, lean forward, let the sore arm hang, and gently rock it in small circles. Do four to five short sessions daily after warming the shoulder.
The one mistake to avoid
The biggest error is forcing aggressive stretches during the freezing stage. Hard pulls add pain and can worsen the capsule. Stick to warm, gentle motions and let the joint loosen naturally.
