Eye Injury First Aid

Learn fast actions to protect an eye after a hit, and discover the one trick that saves sight.

Immediate protection

If something hits the eye, first cover it with a clean cup or bottle cutout, never press or rub, and if you see blood, a cut, or vision blurs, head straight to an eye doctor.

Flush duration

When chemicals or firework powder get in the eye, flush with running water for fifteen to twenty minutes, keeping lids open.

Cold compress for bruised lid

For a bruised eyelid, wrap ice in a thin cloth and gently press on the closed lid and cheekbone, not the eyeball, for ten minutes. Rest with an extra pillow to reduce swelling.

Warning signs of deeper injury

Even if the eye looks okay, watch for blood in front of the colored part, a teardrop-shaped pupil, double vision, flashes, floaters, or a shadow. Any of these means urgent doctor care.

Firework safety

Fireworks add burns, blasts, and powders. Use polycarbonate safety glasses, stay an arm’s length away, and never lean over a firework that failed to go off. Let it cool before approaching.

Children by age

Kids need extra care. Under one year, any eye injury means a doctor visit that day. Toddlers may just rub or refuse to open the eye. Older kids can cover one eye and read to check vision.

The one step to protect eye

The single most effective move is to shield the eye immediately with a cup or bottle before you try anything else, this stops further damage and buys time for professional care.
