Expired Medicine Guide
We’ll break down which medicines stay effective after the date, which become risky, and the simple home-disposal hack you’ll want to remember, plus quick tips for spotting spoiled pills before they cause trouble.
Do expired meds work?
The expiry date is not a sudden poison switch. It’s the last day the maker guarantees full strength under ideal storage. Many solid tablets keep most of their potency for months, especially if sealed and kept cool.
High-risk meds
Some drugs can’t afford loss of strength. Insulin, emergency adrenaline pens, inhalers, and heart, seizure or thyroid tablets may fail when weakened. Also, eye drops and mixed liquid antibiotics can grow germs once opened, so treat them as expired as soon as the date passes.
Eye drops after opening
Most eye-drop bottles stay effective for about four weeks once you crack them open. Write the date on the cap and discard after twenty-eight days to avoid contamination.
Creams open jar
Topical creams and ointments often carry an open-jar symbol with a number and an ‘M’. Six months, or ‘6M’, means you should toss the product after half a year of use.
Spot spoiled meds
Even before the date, heat, moisture or light can ruin a drug. Throw it out if tablets crack, crumble, stick together, or change colour; capsules soften or split; syrups become cloudy, sour, or moldy; or you notice a vinegar-like odor.
The one safe disposal trick
To discard old pills, pull them out of the foil into a plastic bag or jar. Mix in used tea leaves, coffee grounds or soil, seal the bag, then place it inside another sealed container before tossing it in the regular trash on collection day.
