Exam Night Secrets

I'll show you why a short break before bed beats cramming.

All-nighters hurt memory

Your brain files new info while you sleep. Deep sleep and REM strengthen connections, so a fact reviewed at nine p.m. sticks for the nine a.m. exam. Skipping sleep means you see the answer but can’t retrieve it.

Minimum sleep

Six hours of sleep is the floor for most teens; reaching seven to eight hours helps attention and memory stay sharp for the exam. Anything less and marks tend to drop, no matter how much you revised.

Plan your night

Plan your night backward. If the exam starts at nine, aim to be up by six thirty. Turn lights off by eleven thirty for at least seven hours of sleep. Write the lights-off time on your wall as a reminder.

Last revision window

Stop revising 45 to 60 minutes before you turn off the lights. This last hour should be active recall, not re-reading, so the material stays fresh for the morning. Close the book and write what you remember.

Caffeine rules

Caffeine stays in the system for five to six hours. One cup of chai gives about forty to sixty milligrams, a cola thirty-five, instant coffee sixty to eighty. Teens should stay well under a hundred milligrams a day and avoid energy drinks entirely.

Eat right, start right

Dinner should be finished by eight thirty and include a balanced plate, dal, vegetables, roti, a little rice. Skip fried specials that cause heartburn. In the morning, eat protein and slow carbs like an egg with paratha or oats with milk and a banana, about an hour before the paper. Drink water, not sugary drinks.

The one timing to stop

The one timing to stop: finish active recall 45 to 60 minutes before you switch off the lights. Close your books, put the phone away, and let your mind wind down. A short, calm period before sleep locks in what you’ve studied.
