Eucalyptus Oil Overview
Learn how to enjoy eucalyptus oil safely, and stay for the crucial rule about kids that can protect your family in your home today.
Swallowing is poison
Swallowing eucalyptus oil is poisonous. Symptoms appear within half an hour, vomiting, burning mouth, drowsiness, slurred speech, or shallow breathing. Never induce vomiting, and rush to the emergency department with the bottle.
Adult steam guide
Pour about one litre of boiled water into a wide bowl, cool two minutes, add two to three drops of oil. Sit thirty centimeters above, drape a towel over your head, and breathe through the nose for five to ten minutes.
Safe rubs & diffuser
Never apply undiluted oil to skin; mix it with a carrier like coconut, mustard, or sesame. Use one to two drops per teaspoon of carrier, about one to two percent concentration. Test on the inner elbow and wait forty-eight hours before larger use.
Patch test wait
A patch test should sit for forty-eight hours; if any redness, itching, or irritation appears, discard the mixture and do not apply it to larger areas.
Never on babies
For babies and children under six, keep eucalyptus oil away from the face, nose, and chest. No drops on pillows, no vapor bowls or diffusers in a child's room. Use saline drops or a cool-mist humidifier for a blocked nose.
Drop in honey? No
A common myth says a drop of eucalyptus oil in honey or water soothes a cough. That’s unsafe, there’s no safe amount to swallow, especially for children. If a cough lasts more than three weeks, or a fever spikes above thirty-nine degrees Celsius, see a doctor.
The one rule for kids
The single most important rule for families: never let eucalyptus oil near a baby’s face, nose or chest, and keep all bottles out of reach. This simple step prevents the most dangerous reactions.
