In this video we break down what the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) measures, why it changes with age, sex, and everyday factors, and what a high number might indicate.

We also share a practical tip on when to repeat the test for a clearer picture, and remind you when to see a doctor. This is for information only, not medical advice.

ESR Explained

We'll decode what a high ESR really means and give you a simple tip to act on it.

What ESR Measures

ESR, or erythrocyte sedimentation rate, measures how fast red blood cells settle in a thin tube over one hour. When inflammation releases proteins like fibrinogen, cells clump and sink faster, raising the number.

Upper limit men

Most labs flag anything above fifteen millimetres per hour as high for men, but age can push that limit higher.

Age & Sex Normal Range

A quick rule of thumb: for men, divide your age by two; for women, add ten then divide by two. This gives a more realistic upper limit than the generic 15 or 20.

Why Women Read Higher

Women often have higher ESR because they usually have fewer red cells per volume, and conditions like anaemia or pregnancy make cells settle even faster.

Everyday Triggers

Common everyday triggers include a recent cold, cough, or throat infection, a forgotten tooth abscess, and hormonal changes like periods or pregnancy. These can nudge the ESR up without serious disease.

Remember, a single high ESR is just a question mark, not a definitive verdict on your health.

When ESR >100 Matters

When the ESR climbs past a hundred, doctors start looking for fever, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, joint pain, or severe headaches. They may order CRP, repeat blood work, X-ray, or urine tests to narrow it down.

The one practical tip

If your ESR is high, wait two to three weeks after any cold, tooth infection, period, or pregnancy before repeating the test. This gives the result a fair chance to reflect true inflammation.
