Elderly Ramadan Safety
Stay tuned for the one habit that can keep your older loved ones safe while fasting.
Fasting after 65
After 65, the body’s safety margin shrinks. Thirst doesn’t register, kidneys lose water faster, and blood pressure can drop when standing, making dizziness more likely.
Daily fluid goal
Aim for about eight glasses of fluid between iftar and sehri to stay hydrated.
Pre-Ramadan checklist
Book a doctor visit a month before Ramadan, bring every medication, and ask which doses need timing changes. Then set up a pill box with separate sections for sehri and iftar.
Sehri rise safety
The riskiest moment is getting up at three in the morning. Teach them to sit, count to ten, place both feet on the floor, count again, then stand while holding something steady.
Confusion red flag
If your mother repeats herself, looks lost, or is unusually sleepy, don’t write it off as age. Sudden confusion can signal dehydration, low sugar, infection, or low sodium and needs a doctor right away.
Medication & hydration
Medication timing can get tricky. Diuretics may cause dizziness, insulin can trigger low sugar, and blood pressure pills may drop pressure further when dehydrated. Keep the home cool and remind them to sip fluids regularly.
Low sugar threshold
If blood sugar falls below seventy milligrams per deciliter, break the fast and give water, then check again.
The one safe rise tip
The one habit that prevents falls is the slow rise routine: sit, count to ten, feet on floor, count again, then stand holding a stable support.
