Eating Disorder Signs

Stay tuned, because the most useful tip comes right at the end.

Eating disorders, explained

Think of an alarm that never shuts off. In an eating disorder the brain’s alarm about food, weight or shape stays on, even when there’s no danger. That’s why a simple plate can feel like a fire, and why the person feels trapped, not difficult.

Warning signs beyond dieting

One sign alone isn’t proof, but a cluster lasting weeks is a red flag. Skipping meals, eating alone, or constantly saying ‘I already ate’ are warning signs. Cutting out whole food groups, and heading to the bathroom right after meals also matter. Boys can be affected too, often hidden because we don’t expect it. They may chase a ‘lean’ look, making the problem harder to spot.

How to talk without blame

Pick a quiet, private moment, away from the dinner table and siblings. Start with care: ‘I’ve noticed you seem tired and aren’t eating with us, and I’m worried about you.’ Describe what you’ve seen, not weight or looks, and never bring jokes about size in front of relatives. Expect denial; stay calm and suggest a doctor’s check.

Call this in crisis

If any emergency sign appears, fainting, collapse, chest pain, vomiting blood, extreme weakness, or talk of self-harm, dial 1122 in Pakistan or 112 in India right away. Prompt care can save a life.

Pulse under 50 beats

A very slow or irregular pulse, under about fifty beats per minute, signals a medical emergency and needs immediate care.

The one key takeaway

The most effective step is to get professional help. A doctor, therapist, and dietitian can address the underlying fear, not just the food list. A home weight-gain chart alone won’t cure the illness.
