Intro
Here's the short, honest answer, and one tip most people miss.
What is dandasa?
Dandasa is thin, dried strips from the walnut tree, Juglans regia. You’ll find pale-brown, fibrous pieces sold in bundles at local markets across Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kashmir and north India. The orange-brown colour comes from juglone, the same natural dye that stains walnut shells.
Soak time
You soak the strip for five to ten minutes until it softens and bends, ready for chewing.
How to use
Take an eight-to-ten-centimetre strip, soak the tip, then chew the softened end until it frays into a soft brush. Lightly rub the front of your teeth and gums for about a minute, and swipe the same brush across closed lips a few times for that deep red tint. Never share a strip, and keep the pressure gentle to avoid sore gums.
Patch test wait
After rubbing a tiny spot on your wrist, wait forty-eight hours; any itch, redness or swelling means you should skip dandasa on your lips or gums.
User insight
The colour isn’t a side effect. For many users it is the point.
Patch test before first use
Rub a wet, chewed strip on a coin-sized spot inside your wrist and leave it uncovered. Wait 48 hours; if you notice itching, swelling, bumps or a rash, don’t use the bark on your mouth. A brown stain alone is normal and fades in a few days.
Verdict
Dandasa can be a fun, natural lip tint for those without walnut allergies and with healthy gums, but it may irritate, stain teeth and hide early gum problems. Use it sparingly, do a patch test, and keep up with regular dental check-ups.
The one tip to avoid
The single most useful habit is to always do a wrist patch test before you start using dandasa. It quickly tells you whether you’ll react, preventing painful lips, sore gums or hidden gum disease.
