Cinnamon Water Basics

Ever wonder if a simple cinnamon water can be a daily refresher? Stay till the end for the one safe habit you need.

What cinnamon water is

Cinnamon water is just water that has sat with a piece of cinnamon bark until it smells warm and faintly sweet. There's no sugar, almost no calories, and it’s genuinely refreshing when poured cold on a hot day.

Stick length

Use a small stick about five to seven centimeters long for each litre of water.

Cold soak time

A cold soak takes eight to twelve hours in the fridge, giving a mild, sweet-smelling infusion.

Snap test

To tell which bark you have, try breaking the stick. True Ceylon cinnamon crumbles into flaky layers, while cassia resists and cracks like a thin piece of wood. If it snaps, keep the brew mild.

Cold vs simmer

Cold soaking is the gentler way, the water tastes softer, takes on a pleasant scent, and pairs nicely with a slice of apple or lemon peel. Simmering for ten minutes pulls out more flavor and also more coumarin, so the brew is usually diluted afterward.

Who should skip

If you have any liver condition, take blood-thinning medication, are pregnant, or are giving it to a child, skip the daily habit and ask a healthcare professional. Also stop if you notice mouth soreness, rash, heartburn, or stomach upset.

The one safe habit

The safest way to enjoy cinnamon water is to use a single small stick per litre, let it cold-soak for eight to twelve hours, and drink it only a few days a week. This keeps the coumarin intake low and avoids over-use of cassia.
