Cradle Cap Basics

Cradle cap is harmless, shows up in the first few months, and usually fades on its own. A gentle routine of plain oil, a short wait, a soft brush, and mild baby shampoo can help. Stay tuned for the one tip you must never miss.

What is it?

Cradle cap, medically called infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis, looks like crusty yellow or white flakes stuck together by natural oil. It's not dirt and it doesn't itch. It can also appear on eyebrows or behind the ears.

Who gets it?

Most babies get it in the first three months. By six to twelve months it’s usually clear, and after a year it’s rare. If it persists beyond a year, a doctor’s check-up is wise.

Gentle removal routine

Warm a few drops of plain, unscented oil between your palms. Rub gently into the scaly spots, wait fifteen to twenty minutes, then brush in small circles with a soft baby brush before washing with mild shampoo.

Brush guide

Use a soft silicone brush or a clean baby toothbrush only after the oil has soaked. Light strokes lift the softened flakes. Never brush over raw, cracked, or bleeding skin.

What to avoid

Avoid picking or scratching the scales, it can tear skin and invite bacteria. Stay away from adult dandruff shampoos, lemon or turmeric packs, and camphor or menthol balms on the head.

Oil soak time

The oil should sit for about fifteen to twenty minutes to soften the flakes.

The one step matters

The one step that makes the difference is a warm oil soak. Use three to five drops, wait fifteen to twenty minutes, then brush gently. This simple routine clears most cradle cap.
