Chronic Insomnia: Quick Fix

Struggling to fall asleep night after night? Stay tuned because I’ll share a single habit you can start tonight that makes a real difference.

Chronic Insomnia Defined

Doctors call it chronic when you can’t sleep at least three nights a week for three months, and you feel foggy or exhausted during the day. Short-term lapses from stress or a newborn are different and usually pass.

Insomnia threshold

That three-month line is the key threshold clinicians use to label insomnia as chronic.

What CBT-I Is

Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, or CBT-I, is a short, structured program, usually four to eight sessions, that reshapes how you associate your bed with sleep and resets your sleep timing. Its benefits stick around even after you finish the program, unlike sleeping pills that lose effect quickly.

Practical CBT-I Habits

The core habits are simple: pick a wake-up time and stick to it every day, reserve the bed for sleeping only, and if you’re awake for twenty minutes, get out of bed and do something dim. Also keep phones, laptops, and meals out of the bedroom, and avoid arguments before sleep.

Chronic insomnia is a learned habit of the bed, which is why it can be unlearned.

Tonight

Tonight, set an alarm for the same time tomorrow and the day after, charge your phone on the far side of the room, and if you can’t fall asleep within twenty minutes, get up and relax in low light.

The one habit

The one habit that makes the biggest impact is a consistent wake-up time; it trains your body’s clock, reduces night-time tossing, and works without any pills.
