Tracking Your Child's Growth

Stay with me and I'll show you the one simple habit that tells you if your child is on the right growth path, revealed at the end.

What you need

You’ll need a digital scale that reads to the nearest hundred grams, a soft non-stretch tape, and a flat wall with a hard floor to get accurate measurements. Make sure the scale is on a hard, flat surface for accuracy.

How to weigh your child

Weigh your child at the same time each day, in a dry diaper or light clothes, no shoes. For babies, weigh yourself first, then hold the baby and subtract. For toddlers, let them stand in the middle of the scale, looking straight ahead.

Weight regain by

Most infants regain their birth weight within two weeks of life.

Length & height

Measure length by laying the baby on a firm surface, placing a book upright at the head, and keeping the knees flat. Keep the baby calm and still; a second adult can help hold the knees. After age two, measure standing height using a wall-mounted stadiometer or a simple book method.

Length gain first year

In the first twelve months a child typically adds about twenty-five centimeters in length.

Read the growth chart

Plot weight, height, and head circumference on the chart. Follow the centile line over months; staying on the same line is normal, even if low. A sudden drop across lines warrants a doctor visit. If weight and height diverge by two centile lines, ask about nutrition.

The one key point

The most reliable sign of healthy growth is staying on the same centile line over time, even if that line is low. If the line drops, consult your pediatrician promptly. Consistent tracking helps you spot issues early and talk to your doctor with confidence.
