Chilblains Home Care

Stay with us to learn why gentle warmth beats hot water for itchy, swollen toes.

What chilblains are

Cold makes the tiny vessels in your skin tighten to protect core heat. When you suddenly warm those cold toes, the vessels open too fast, leaking fluid that causes the red-purple swelling and maddening itch.

Hot water myth

A common habit is to dunk cold feet in steaming water or press a heater right next to them. It feels great for a few minutes, but that rapid heat forces the vessels open too quickly, sparking the itch and swelling later.

Warm slowly, step by step

Step one: come inside, remove damp socks or gloves immediately. Step two: gently pat skin dry, especially between toes. Step three: put on loose, dry wool or two thin cotton socks and stay in a normal warm room for twenty minutes. If you soak, use lukewarm water at body temperature for five minutes, then dry well.

Best socks & gloves

Loose footwear is key. Choose wool or wool-blend socks, or two thin cotton pairs that leave toes free. Change them if they get damp. Wear indoor slippers with thick soles over cold floors, and gloves when outside or biking.

Typical healing time

If you avoid sudden heat shocks, most chilblains fade away in about three weeks, with the redness and itch gradually disappearing.

The one habit to change

The single habit that stops chilblains is never placing cold, damp feet directly on a heater, hot water bottle, or electric blanket. Let them warm slowly in a normal room instead.
