Real Sandalwood Secrets

Stay tuned to learn why true white sandalwood costs a fortune and the simple trick to stretch it.

What is chandan?

Sandalwood is a slow-growing evergreen that steals nutrients from nearby roots. Only the inner heartwood and big roots develop the fragrant oil, while the pale outer wood is almost odorless and discarded.

Traditional view & uses

In Unani, sandalwood is called cold and dry, used to calm heat in the body and heart. Ayurveda calls it a cooling herb, often applied as a forehead paste during worship.

Top tree price

An exceptional sandalwood tree once sold for 1.25 crore rupees, underscoring how rare and valuable the heartwood truly is.

2023 auction total

In September 2023 Kerala’s online auction fetched 27 crore rupees for nearly 26 tonnes of heartwood, showing the massive market price.

Spot fake chandan

Cheap chandan powder is often just sawdust from other woods with a synthetic scent, and cheap oil may be a carrier or Australian sandalwood sold as ‘Mysore’. If a 10 ml bottle costs as much as shampoo, it’s probably fake.

How to use real chandan

For skin or face, dilute one drop of sandalwood oil in five millilitres of a carrier like almond or jojoba. Mix a teaspoon of real powder with rose water to a soft paste and leave on clean skin for ten to fifteen minutes before rinsing.

Safety first

If you notice itching, redness, bumps or swelling, wash the area and stop using it. Never ingest sandalwood oil, and keep it away from children. Pregnant or nursing women should stick to a light, diluted scent and avoid medicinal use.

The one tip to stretch sandalwood

The one tip to make your sandalwood last longer: use just a few drops diluted for oil, and turn the remaining powder into a paste for larger areas. This stretches the fragrance without waste.
